Are you looking for extra blood and guts, a story of corporate sabotage, and a pitch black sense of humor? Then look no further than this Swedish horror comedy.
A collection of oddballs are forced to a corporate retreat by their overbearing boss Ingela, played by Maria Sid, and the slick corporate upstart, Jonas, played with a greasy smirk by Adam Lundgren. Lina has been on leave until recently, and really doesn’t want to be here. She’s played by Katia Winter.
The film has a very offbeat Scandinavian sense of humor about these people and the corporate world. It has a nice sharp satire of corporate political correctness, team building activities, and brown-nosing and boot licking of the employees. There’s a funny moment when they practice how to shovel for the big ground breaking photoshoot the next day.
As the corporate retreat progresses, Lina realizes that the major shopping center that the higher ups are celebrating has some major problems. The biggest being that the company stole land from a local farmer. When Lina confronts Jonas about this we discover that the farmer killed himself when he realized that the company destroyed him financially. At this point, the killer shows up.
The corporate retreat is at a cabin resort far off in the woods. It’s like Friday the 13th, but with washed up adults who hate their corporate lives instead of horny teens. The perspective shift offers a really nice commentary on the slasher genre and on life itself with a few really poignant moments in between the bitter satire.
The killer brings higher stakes, bigger laughs, and gallons of gore. If you’re not a fan of gore then skip this one. However if you find the idea of a killer in an oversized smiling mask chopping up a brown nosing corporate stooge in a hot tub with an outboard boat motor as a weapon, grossly hilarious, then this movie might be for you.
The kills in this movie are gross and so far over the top you can’t even see the top anymore. The murder with the boat motor is hilarious and absurd. There’s a hammock murder that is both an homage to Friday the 13th and an act of one-ups-man-ship. A woman gets a pick axe to the top of her head, and then proceeds to stumble around the campgrounds for the rest of the movie in a macabre act of absurd humor.
I found this darkly funny, but what I enjoyed more was the story. The movie doesn’t short change it’s narrative. It spends time developing its characters. Lina’s concerns about the corporations actions are taken seriously. The way others bully Lina feels real and like it actually matters. The plot isn’t just placeholder until the murders can start. It actually matters, and for once in a slasher it feels nice that caring about the characters isn’t an act of futility.
It’s definitely not everyone’s cup of tea. The blood and guts are enough to disqualify a lot of people. The subtitles will also keep plenty of people away, but it is a lot of fun. It’s going to be worth your time if you decide to give it a watch.
It’s my cup of tea. B+
