Saw IV

Okay, we’re getting to the “why am I doing this to myself” section of the series. this movie is bad. It’s poorly executed and terribly thought out.

A supporting player from the last two films is promoted to leading status mostly because everyone else is dead. This is officer Rigg, played by Lyriq Bent. He’s a good police officer who tries to save people. Jigsaw decides he save people too much and must be taught a lesson in not saving people.

The best way to learn this lesson is an overly elaborate set of traps and torture devices that he must inflict upon others.

While this is going on Detective Hoffman, played by Costas Mandylor, is trying to solve the mystery of Jigsaw’s death. Jigsaw died very stupidly in the last movie. But his nonsense isn’t over yet because the movie made money.

Finally, detective Strahm, played by Scott Patterson is trying to hunt down jigsaw or maybe he’s hunting down Hoffman. Or maybe he’s trying to save Rigg.

On top of that we have jigsaw’s backstory. We see Tobin Bell get to play something other than sedate menace. We meet his ex wife. We learn his tragic backstory. We discover what drove him to become jigsaw. Is it interesting? Sometimes.

If that sounds convoluted that’s because it is! The only thing actually scary in this movie is the plot structure. This is the kind of screenplay that gives every screenwriting professor a headache.

Each of these movies has ended with a big twist or like ten big twists and a montage explaining why it was a stupid twist and how it all actually made sense. When it finally happened in this movie I was furious. It enraged how dumb it was. This was the dumbest anticlimax I’ve seen in years. I can see how all the pieces fit together an as they fell into place I started rolling my eyes with how dumb it was. My eyes still from rolling them so much.

Is there anything to be gained from watching more of these? The triumph of knowing I conquered this series is all I can think of. There’s very little keeping me watching. I just don’t want this dumb series to win. I think this series is the ultimate jigsaw trap. Once you’re in it, it tortures you until the ultimate stupid conclusion.

Not my cup of tea. F
